Radio presenter Ben Fordham faced an unexpected PR crisis this week after firmly denouncing anti-Indigenous behaviour, only to witness his listeners enthusiastically celebrate his “bold support” for precisely that abuse.
Initially, Fordham delivered a straightforward rebuke of racist actions directed at Indigenous communities, stating unequivocally that such behaviour was unacceptable.
But nevertheless, in a swift and startling misinterpretation his audience responded jubilantly, commending him for finally supporting their prejudiced beliefs.
“Thanks Ben, it’s about time someone spoke up for our (white) side” said one delighted fan.
Another wrote “Finally, a host who supports good old-fashioned prejudice! We’re right behind you, mate!”
Subsequently, Fordham spent an exhausting evening repeatedly clarifying that his original message was a condemnation, not an endorsement… but his desperate pleas only seemed to inspire further admiration from followers convinced he was cleverly speaking in code.
So now, Fordham faces the surreal dilemma of explicitly teaching his listeners basic moral values on-air, openly considering a new segment titled “Today’s Reminder: Racism is Still Bad“…
But in the meantime, producers have cautiously suggested he avoid future attempts at moral clarity… as his most loyal listeners seem unable to cope.
