The Broncos have defended inviting Ben Roberts-Smith into the dressing sheds, explaining the club was simply looking for someone with elite experience in high-pressure losses.

After Brisbane’s shock 30-26 defeat to the Dragons, staff reportedly searched for a guest speaker who understood disappointment, reputation management and walking into a room where nobody quite knew where to look.

“We wanted the boys to learn resilience” said one club insider. “And who better than a bloke who lost the defamation case, lost the appeal, and then ran out of legal interchanges at the High Court?”

First Nations fans said the decision had strong “gammon uncle at the barbecue” energy: the kind where someone says “nah, hear him out” five seconds before everyone starts packing up the potato salad.

The NRL quickly distanced itself, which Broncos supporters noted was the first effective line-speed anyone associated with the club had shown all afternoon.

Dragons fans welcomed the distraction, saying it was nice to see Brisbane cop two losses in one day without either involving a forward pass debate.

The Broncos said future dressing-room guests would be assessed under a new standard: must bring leadership, values and fewer court defeats than the home side.
