WASHINGTON DC – US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has confirmed the United States is the only country with the capability, timing, and political space to lead Project Freedom in the Strait of Hormuz. The Australian Government immediately nodded in agreement having never claimed to have any of those things either.
“Many partners want to help,” Rubio said. “But not all of them have what it takes.”
The remarks were enthusiastically received in Canberra where officials confirmed that having what it takes has not been a key performance indicator since the Fraser years.
“We absolutely understand,” said a senior Foreign Affairs spokesperson. “We’ve been telling remote communities the same thing for forty years. Sometimes you just don’t have the capability. Or the timing. Or the will.”
Rubio further explained Project Freedom would protect global shipping, fuel supplies, fertiliser, and humanitarian aid. This ensures critical resources continue to reach all corners of the world except the parts of the Northern Territory that requested them in 2018.
The mission was reportedly named Project Freedom following a brainstorming session that ruled out Project Liberty, Project Eagle, and Project We Promise This Isn’t About Oil.
The Australian Government has indicated full support. The Prime Minister confirmed Australia stands ready to deliver fuel, fertiliser, and humanitarian aid anywhere in the world that is not currently inside Australia.
A Defence Department official added the commitment demonstrates Australia’s reliability as a partner. Particularly to partners located eight thousand kilometres from any Aboriginal community.
