AUSTRALIA WIDE – Major retailers have confirmed their Anzac Day messaging strategies have been “carefully calibrated” to balance remembrance with ongoing commercial activity.
In-store displays and checkout messaging included phrases such as “Remember Today” alongside limited-time offers, prompting debate about the boundaries between commemoration and commerce.
Retail representatives said the approach reflects consumer expectations.
“Customers want to participate in remembrance while continuing their shopping experience,” a spokesperson said.
Critics argue the trend reflects the increasing commercialisation of national observances.
“There is a risk that meaning is diluted when commemoration is embedded within transactional environments,” one observer noted.
Retailers maintain their messaging has been reviewed to ensure it remains “respectful and appropriate.”
