SYDNEY, NSW – A legal dispute between Rebel Wilson and Charlotte MacInnes – the star of Wilson’s directorial debut “The Deb” – will be streamed on YouTube after Wilson was summoned to appear in court over social media posts, generating 200-plus Google searches and completing the arc of a story that began as a film promotion and has evolved into something significantly more complicated.

Deadline reported: “Rebel Wilson’s Legal Faceoff With ‘The Deb’ Star Charlotte MacInnes To Be Streamed On YouTube.” This is a sentence about two professional creative people whose working relationship appears to have ended in a way that the Australian court system will now mediate live on the internet, in front of whoever wants to watch.

The Daily Telegraph described the underlying dispute as “a shower, text and lawsuit,” which sounds like either a very bad weekend or a solid three-act structure. 9News confirmed Wilson is “set to star in a real-life courtroom drama”, which given the YouTube component is not entirely a metaphor.

The decision to stream court proceedings on YouTube reflects a broader democratisation of legal processes that transparency advocates support and reality television producers are quietly noting for future reference.

For First Nations communities – who have had sustained, involuntary and extensively documented relationships with Australian courts, most of which were not streamed on YouTube and several of which resulted in outcomes that remain the subject of active advocacy and coronial inquiries – the spectacle of celebrity litigation as appointment viewing carries a particular texture.

“Great that people are interested in court now” said one legal aid lawyer who works in remote communities. “Perhaps they could also watch some of the other ones.”

The film is out. The case is streaming. The popcorn has been ordered.
