SYDNEY, NSW – Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, filmed a surprise appearance on MasterChef Australia during her visit to the country this week, generating 2,000-plus Google searches and at least four news cycles before a single episode had aired.
Reports emerged that Meghan was “very frustrated” with MasterChef producers following the filming, with sources citing creative differences over how her segment was being handled. The producers have not commented. Network Ten has not commented. The MasterChef kitchen, however, was described by witnesses as “tense in a different way than usual.”
The SMH ran a piece titled “So, Meghan’s going on MasterChef? Our resident show expert shares his thoughts” – a sentence that exists and was published in a serious newspaper. People Magazine confirmed the appearance was a “surprise.” Australia confirmed nothing about this was surprising.
For First Nations viewers who have spent years watching MasterChef occasionally acknowledge sixty thousand years of food culture through a single themed episode with native ingredients and a pan-flute soundtrack, the news that the show’s biggest story of the season would be a visiting royal’s frustration with her call sheet was received with a level of equanimity that can only be described as practiced.
“We’ve been waiting for bush tucker to get a full series” said one Gunditjmara food entrepreneur. “Instead we’re getting a Duchess who is filthy at the director of photography. Different kind of unmet expectations but yes, familiar feeling…”
MasterChef Australia Series 18 premiered April 19 without Meghan’s episode. The white aprons were distributed. Contestants wept beside cooling racks. The Duchess’s frustrations are ongoing.
