GOLD COAST – Following the dramatic asylum of seven members of Iran’s women’s football team a local Yugambeh elder has extended an official welcome. 🇦🇺
“Welcome to Country sisters. For real this time. Not the government kind where they welcome you and then make everything harder” said elder Aunty Denise Corowa.
The Iranian players refused to sing their national anthem before their opening Asian Cup match and were branded “traitors” by Iranian state media. Aunty Denise said she could relate to anthem problems. “We’ve been having issues with the national anthem since they changed it from ‘young and free’ to ‘one and free’ and thought that fixed everything.”
Prime Minister Albanese confirmed the women were granted humanitarian visas and moved to a safe location. Donald Trump also weighed in on Truth Social offering to take them if Australia wouldn’t. Aunty Denise found this confusing. “The fella who’s bombing their country is offering to save them from their country? That’s like the fox offering to guard the henhouse.” 🦊
The Matildas’ Sam Kerr publicly welcomed the Iranian players. Aunty Denise agreed it was a beautiful moment but had one concern. “Just make sure they don’t put them in Nauru. That’s not a welcome that’s a punishment.”
She said the community would organise a barbecue for the women once they were settled. “Gonna introduce them to a proper snag sanga. That’s the real Australian citizenship test.”
At press time one of the Iranian players had reportedly already been offered a spot in a local over-35s women’s comp in Southport.
