CANBERRA – The ACT Government is facing calls for a formal investigation after it emerged that senior public servants may have actively obstructed Indigenous policy work for more than two years while simultaneously winning awards for “cultural competency.”

Freedom of information documents released this week revealed that the former head of the ACT’s Aboriginal affairs office had raised concerns multiple times about work being blocked. Each concern was reportedly met with a reply-all email thanking him for his “valuable input” followed by complete inaction.

“I felt like my voice was fading to where it was extremely isolating and meaningless” one former elected representative told reporters. Those close to the situation say this feeling is also known as “attending any government consultation about Aboriginal people.”

A government spokesperson said the ACT remains “deeply committed” to Closing the Gap. When pressed on which gaps specifically they had closed they pointed to a recently installed water fountain in the lobby of an office building near Parliament House.

Sources inside the public service say the strategy of appearing supportive while systematically blocking work is not a bug but a feature that has been refined over several decades. “You have to admire the craftsmanship” said one observer. “It takes real effort to attend that many working groups and produce absolutely nothing.”

The minister responsible has not yet commented but is understood to be waiting for a brief from the office that allegedly stopped producing briefs.
