CANBERRA – The Commonwealth has released its latest Closing the Gap report and implementation plan, confirming the nation remains strongly committed to progress, provided progress stays within the approved formatting requirements.

A spokesperson said the documents demonstrate partnership with First Nations communities, noting the report includes “important appendices” which is government language for “the real stuff is down the back”.

The plan outlines priorities for the year ahead, including “strengthening partnerships”, “building capability” and “embedding reform”, which insiders confirmed means “moving the same sentences into a new section titled ‘Action’”.

To support transparency, the government has also committed to a public launch featuring a panel, a photo wall and a live demonstration of the most consistent Closing the Gap achievement: publishing documents on time.

Community leaders welcomed genuine accountability but said outcomes require sustained resourcing, community control and governments doing what they said they’d do.

“We’re listening,” the spokesperson said. “That’s why we’ve created a feedback loop so strong it goes in circles.”

At time of publication, officials confirmed the next phase will focus on “implementation”, beginning with the creation of an Implementation Oversight Group to oversee how implementation is described.
