CANBERRA – A new analysis warns more than 45,000 Indigenous households face unmet housing need, including rental stress, overcrowding and substandard housing – prompting government to confirm it takes the issue seriously and has immediately convened a meeting to discuss how serious it is.
Researchers say the gap is large and growing, and that fragmented governance and weak accountability are holding back progress. Government responded by unveiling the Whole-of-System Alignment Roadmap, a document designed to align the systems that were previously misaligned due to excessive alignment.
A spokesperson said major housing reform is underway and urged patience, noting housing is “complex” and can’t be solved overnight — unless you’re building luxury apartments, in which case it’s solved by Tuesday.
Community advocates said the problem isn’t mystery. It’s power and follow-through: long-term investment, community control, transfer of stock and funding models that reflect real costs – especially in remote communities.
“We’re committed to Closing the Gap” the spokesperson said. “That’s why we’ve set a target to increase ‘momentum’ and ‘collaboration’.”
At press time, the spokesperson confirmed a national strategy is being considered, once the government finishes consulting on the consultation approach.
