JABIRU – Community tensions in Jabiru have again highlighted the long shadow of royalties: big numbers on paper, and everyday reality still doing it tough.
Local observers said the conflict is about fairness, living conditions and who gets heard. Institutions responded by announcing a “pathway forward” consisting of three parts: a briefing, a process and a process to improve the process.
A spokesperson said the situation is “sensitive” and requires careful management. “We are committed to equitable outcomes” they said, standing beside a map of funding flows that resembled a river system where every stream mysteriously diverts into “Administration”.
Residents said they’re tired of cycles: announcements, committees and promises that arrive fresh as ever, while housing stays tired as ever.
In response, a new Housing-Royalties Alignment Working Group was formed to “bring stakeholders together”. The group’s first act was to split into two sub-groups due to “alignment challenges”.
The meeting ended with a communiqué stating all parties had agreed on the importance of unity, followed immediately by a schedule of separate meetings “to protect unity from too much contact”.
Community members said they want dignity, repairs and transparency. The institutions confirmed those priorities are “strongly noted” and will be reflected in the next document titled Dignity, Repairs & Transparency: Draft 1 (Final) (Really Final).
