Indigenous‑run newsroom IndigiNews has launched an all‑expenses‑paid photojournalism fellowship in Mi’kma’ki, positioning the program as a direct investment in Indigenous people telling Indigenous stories – from behind the camera as well as in front of it.
The initiative, billed as the inaugural IndigiNews ReFocus Photojournalism Fellowship: Mi’kma’ki, is a new annual program created by tâpwêwin media, IndigiNews’ parent organisation. Organisers say the 2026 fellowship will run 17–23 May 2026 as a week‑long intensive at the University of King’s College in Kjipuktuk (Halifax), Nova Scotia, and will be offered at no cost to participants.
According to the program site, five to seven candidates will be selected by a judging panel and provided with travel, on‑campus accommodation, hands‑on instruction and professional photography equipment. The fellowship is designed for a range of experience levels (with priority for Indigenous students in Atlantic Canada) and it encourages applications from across Canada.
Eligibility is explicit: the program is open to Indigenous individuals only, with organisers stating the fellowship is grounded in Indigenous perspectives, experiences and community priorities. The site also states that a basic working knowledge of using a camera (including a phone camera) is required, while prior journalism experience is not.
