CAMEROON – After reports of a brutal attack on a Mbororo pastoralist community, world leaders have responded swiftly by feeling very, very concerned for several minutes.
“Violence against Indigenous peoples is unacceptable” said one official, adjusting their lanyard. “We will not rest until we’ve drafted a strongly worded statement that mentions it in paragraph four.”
The massacre has briefly disrupted the international community’s busy schedule of conferences on protecting vulnerable populations somewhere theoretical.
“We’re aware of the situation” a diplomat confirmed. “We’ve already commissioned a map to find out exactly where Cameroon is in relation to our trade partners.”
NGOs have called for accountability, protections and an end to impunity. Governments have called for calm, restraint and whatever else doesn’t require sanctions, funding or upsetting anyone with an army.
Meanwhile, Mbororo survivors are left to bury their dead, care for the injured and continue living on land everyone else only remembers exists when a new safari lodge needs marketing copy.
“Indigenous lives matter” the diplomat added. “Particularly as a moral talking point in our next election campaign.”
