NAIDOC Local Grants 2026 to open early 2026, with three funding streams

Community groups, schools and organisations planning NAIDOC celebrations this year are being urged to get ready early, with an official grant overview flagging $3.0 million (GST exclusive) will be available nationally through the NAIDOC Local Grants 2026 round.

The overview says the program supports small-scale NAIDOC activities at grassroots and community levels across Australia, backing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and organisations to celebrate the histories, cultures and achievements of First Nations peoples.

In 2026, NAIDOC Week is expected to run from 5 – 12 July and the funding is flagged across three streams:

  • Stream One – Educational institutions: up to $1,500
  • Stream Two – Small scale grants: up to $10,000
  • Stream Three – Large scale grants: more than $10,000 and up to $25,000

The overview says applications will open in early 2026 and remain open for approximately four weeks, with applicants advised to register for email notifications on GrantConnect. (A GrantConnect forecast listing also indicates the round is expected to open in January 2026… but final dates should be checked when the application package is published.)

The National NAIDOC Week website states the National Indigenous Australians Agency (NIAA) manages the NAIDOC Local Grants and the application process, delivered under Program 1.4 – Culture and Capability of the Indigenous Advancement Strategy.

Applicants are also being reminded the funding is a contribution, not a blank cheque. The overview states: “NAIDOC Local Grants funding is not intended to cover the full cost of running your activity.”

“The Albanese Government is pleased to support local events where all Australians can come together, share experiences and celebrate First Nations cultures.” – Minister for Indigenous Australians, Senator Malarndirri McCarthy
