Mundoo Island Station will be added to Coorong National Park after a joint purchase by the Federal Government, the South Australian Government and the Foundation for National Parks and Wildlife.

In a joint statement on Tuesday, 6 January 2026, the partners said the 1,900-hectare property would lift the internationally recognised national park to more than 50,000 hectares.

The acquisition includes Mundoo, Ewe, and Long Islands, plus surrounding islands off the eastern tip of Hindmarsh Island.

The governments said the site sits just south of Goolwa at the end of the River Murray and forms part of the 142,500-hectare Coorong and Lakes Alexandrina and Albert Ramsar Wetland.

They said the station (which has operated as a cattle and sheep property for more than a century) will be destocked, with grazing, cropping, and fertiliser use to cease to support wetland restoration and rehabilitation.

Ngarrindjeri Aboriginal Corporation Executive Officer Bill Wilson welcomed the move, saying, “Ngarrindjeri Aboriginal Corporation are genuinely excited by the State Government purchase of Mundoo Island.”

The Ngarrindjeri Aboriginal Corporation backed the acquisition as both environmentally and culturally significant.
