For too long, Indigenous knowledge was treated as a nice-to-have in Australia’s science story. Add it at the end. A token “consult us later”.

But that thinking missed the point.

First Nations science is empirical, place-based knowledge built over tens of thousands of years, which is evidence tested through observation, iteration and careful transmission.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Science Day is a chance to reset how we think about Australian science.
