The Queensland Conservation Council (QCC) has accused coal mining corporation Magnetic South of allegedly clearing environmentally sensitive areas without obtaining necessary federal approval.
Recent satellite and drone footage provided by QCC indicates extensive clearing within the proposed Gemini coal mine site near Dingo, despite lacking formal approval under the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act.
The council emphasises that the cleared region is home to multiple endangered species, including the Greater Glider, Bridled Nail-tail Wallaby and Koala, as well as vital water resources.
Charlie Cox from QCC stated:
“Coal mines destroy koalas and greater gliders twice over – first when they bulldoze their forest homes, and second when they dig and burn the coal beneath it to fuel climate collapse.”
Currently, Magnetic South has not publicly responded to these allegations. Federal government communications suggest action should be taken to avoid legal risks, yet a formal response or enforcement action remains pending.
