In a groundbreaking announcement today, prominent Australian venture capital firm Blackbird Ventures revealed they would officially rebrand to Whitebird Ventures, a move described as an innovative strategy to openly reflect their historical investment practices.
“Look, we’ve done some serious soul-searching…” Whitebird Founders proudly declared at a launch event, conveniently hosted in Melbourne’s least culturally diverse café.
“We thought it was high time our brand honestly represented who we invest in – predominantly white, non-Indigenous founders with big dreams and even bigger trust funds.”
The rebranding effort reportedly came after repeated unsuccessful attempts to locate Indigenous entrepreneurs, an effort described by industry experts as “the corporate equivalent of looking for kangaroos in Antarctica”.
The Indigenous startup community welcomed the news with considerable amusement and relief and Kamilaroi entrepreneur Dylan Murphy remarked+
“To be fair, when your outreach to Indigenous founders involves accidentally stumbling into NAIDOC events and mistaking it for an arts-and-crafts fair, it’s probably better just to admit defeat.”
A representative for Whitebird confidently outlined their bold new slogan: “Whitebird – Investing in Diversity of Thought (as long as those thoughts aren’t too diverse).”
Meanwhile, Indigenous entrepreneurs, busy launching innovative startups without VC funding, have reportedly asked Whitebird to at least provide some good memes in the future, since funding remains clearly off the table.
