Private funding from influential Australians is playing a growing role in the spread of anti-Indigenous sentiment, with recent revelations highlighting prominent figures Jillian Segal and John Roth as major financial backers of the far-right lobby group “Advance.”

The Henroth Discretionary Trust, a private entity controlled by Segal and Roth, provided $50,000 to Advance in the 2023-24 financial year, according to Australian Electoral Commission records.

And this substantial contribution makes the couple the second-largest funders of Advance, a group that seems to be aggressively disseminating divisive rhetoric against Indigenous Australians, immigrants and other minority groups.

Segal’s involvement is particularly contentious given her official role as Australia’s Special Envoy to Combat Antisemitism, appointed by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese (government) in July 2024 to promote national unity and tolerance.

And this apparent contradiction has raised ethical questions about the compatibility of her public advocacy for social cohesion with her private financial support for Advance, whose messaging explicitly targets and misrepresents Indigenous cultural practices.

Interpretive commentary from Indigenous advocacy groups has frequently suggested that covert funding of divisive organisations by influential Australians contributes significantly to undermining reconciliation efforts and escalating social divisions.

And while Segal and Roth have not publicly addressed their motivations or the implications of their financial support, their actions highlight broader concerns around accountability and transparency in private political donations.

Segal and Roth declined multiple requests for comment from The Klaxon, leaving unanswered questions about their stance on the impact of their donations.
