Imagine $70 billion quietly slipping under a wall built explicitly to ensure Aboriginal jobs / employment opportunities… but this isn’t just an imaginative scenario, it’s the stark reality uncovered by a recent Commonwealth audit.

The recent audit discovered the widespread misuse of an exemption category labelled “Other“, which enables Commonwealth departments to sidestep Indigenous employment obligations and creates a loophole so vague and convenient that it undermines the entire intent of the Indigenous Procurement Policy.

But exemptions shouldn’t be a matter of convenience.

Especially since the Australian Government and Bureaucrats (with their minions) running the show consistently fail to achieve meaningful progress with closing the disparity gaps.

“A further five targets show improvement but are not on track to be met, while progress towards four targets is worsening.”

Why does clarity matter?

Because without transparent accountability, these policies risk becoming meaningless gestures rather than instruments for meaningful change.

Thus, Indigenous (social, not get-rich) procurement policies must be transparent, accountable and enforceable to truly serve their intended purpose.
