The Sámi drama series Shut Up (Oro Jaska) is bravely confronting sensitive topics such as sexual assault and queer identity, breaking traditional silences within Indigenous communities and sparking conversations worldwide.

Set in the heart of Sápmi (the homeland of the Sámi people in northern Norway), Shut Up (Oro Jaska) explores complex themes through its youthful characters and offers a powerful portrayal rarely seen in mainstream media.

Series creators Silje Bürgin-Borch and Vegard Bjørsmo crafted the series based on a core principle of Indigenous representation – “Nothing about us without us”. This ethos ensured authentic narratives, with the show’s writers’ room exclusively comprising young Sámi voices, many of whom identified as queer, adding depth and genuine cultural perspective to the drama.

The Banff nomination not only underscores the high quality and emotional impact of the series but also marks a significant moment for Indigenous cinema globally. Sámi storytelling is increasingly acknowledged in international media circles, with Shut Up (Oro Jaska) playing a crucial role in bringing Indigenous narratives into wider view.

This recognition provides an important platform for young Indigenous filmmakers worldwide, highlighting the need for and success of authentic representation in media industries often dominated by mainstream narratives.

The awards ceremony will take place in Banff (Alberta, Canada) on June 9, 2025, with the show’s creators attending in person.
