In an ironic twist worthy of a political comedy, Peter Dutton discovered too late that his endlessly repeated mantraIf you don’t know, vote no had effectively coached his own supporters to reject him at the polls.

On election day, hundreds of Dickson voters turned up with their ballots clearly marked “NO” beside Dutton’s name (unfortunately, invalidating them) but symbolically indicating their confusion over what Dutton actually stood for.

“We followed his instructions precisely” said confused voter Janet Briggs.

“The poor man never explained what he wanted to do… so what choice did we have but to vote ‘no’?”

When reached for comment, a visibly exasperated Dutton admitted:

“I probably should’ve been clearer… telling people to vote no without context turned out not to be the brilliant campaign strategy we envisioned.”

The Liberal Party (keen to avoid future misunderstandings) has reportedly banned negative slogans altogether, opting instead for the safer:

“If you’re unsure… maybe just ask someone!?”
