The Australian Labor Government has a chance to make things right with the Offshore Petroleum and Greenhouse Gas Storage Legislation Amendment Bill 2024 because this bill is about changing laws that affect the sea and offshore oil and gas work.
And there’s a big issue at stake – the rights and voices of First Nations people.
And the Australian Conservation Foundation isn’t happy.
Because they say the bill doesn’t properly address First Nations people’s concerns about their land, water and heritage, especially with big gas projects like the Santos’ Barossa gas project on the horizon. These projects aren’t just an environmental worry; they’re a threat to the culture and heritage that Indigenous communities have protected for thousands of years.
“Disappointingly, the committee’s majority report has failed to engage deeply with First Nations’ concerns about consultation and environmental governance problems in this bill.
Annika Reynolds, climate policy adviser at Australian Conservation Foundation
Why First Nations Consultation is Key
Talking to First Nations communities isn’t just a step to check off a list, it’s a right – to make sure Indigenous people have a say in decisions about their land and heritage…. and critics say the current bill doesn’t do enough to ensure these communities are truly listened to, risking their exclusion from important environmental decisions.
What Needs to Change
The Labor Government has an opportunity to show leadership by:
- Improving Consultation: Make sure talks with First Nations communities are genuine, clear and respectful. Their knowledge and views must shape the decisions we make about our land and water.
- Protecting Heritage: The laws must keep Indigenous heritage safe, saying no to any project that could damage important cultural sites.
- Prioritising the Environment: The government should stand firm on environmental protection, aligning its policies with the goal to tackle climate change and preserve Australia for future generations.
- Keeping Our Promises: Australia must live up to its international promises to Indigenous peoples, including those in the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
As discussions around the bill continue, it’s crucial for the Labor Government to listen and respond to First Nations communities’ concerns.
And true collaboration and respect for Indigenous rights are the only paths to a sustainable and fair future for all Australians.
