BORROLOOLA – Traditional Owners have won a major compensation ruling connected to the impacts of large-scale mining, prompting immediate government action in the form of a press release titled “We Hear You (Subject To Treasury)”.
Officials said the decision is “significant” and “complex”, noting it will be carefully reviewed by an internal panel of experts specialising in the ancient art of not paying things quickly.
A spokesperson said the government remains committed to respectful relationships and will demonstrate this by creating a new unit called the Compensation Coordination & Stakeholder Confidence Branch, staffed by people who can say “moving forward” without blinking.
The spokesperson confirmed the first stage of implementation will focus on “community engagement”, including a listening session, a second listening session for those who couldn’t make the first and a “targeted roundtable” where nothing is decided but everyone gets name tags.
Community members said the ruling matters because impacts are real, intergenerational and not solved by soft language or shiny brochures.
“We’re taking this seriously,” the spokesperson said. “We’ve already booked a meeting with ourselves to plan a meeting with the right people.”
At time of publication, the government announced it would also consider a new policy tool known as Prompt Payment… but clarified it was “still in pilot”.
